Subchapter 3.2 Student Counselling and Tutoring

Student Support and Wellbeing at Hotelschool The Hague

Milestones Completed

HTH places significant emphasis on providing comprehensive student support throughout the Master's Leading Hotel Transformation programme, ensuring that students receive both academic and personal guidance tailored to their individual needs. The programme fosters a student-centered learning environment, where students take ownership of their learning while being supported by experienced faculty and study coaches.

From the start of the programme, students are linked to the programme coordinator, who serves as their primary point of contact for academic guidance. Additionally, faculty members, the student counselor, and the confidentiality advisor provide further support. The programme coordinator assists with course-related concerns and offers strategic advice on academic progress. To enhance this support system, students are also encouraged to connect with programme alumni, gaining valuable insights from their experiences and a peer perspective on coursework and assignments.

Beyond academic tutoring, the programme offers personal coaching to develop leadership skills. The Personal Leadership course, spanning three blocks, includes individual coaching sessions focusing on self-awareness, leadership potential, and emotional intelligence. These sessions empower students with the confidence and skills required to manage transformation in professional settings.

To further support students, HTH provides study skills development and time management training. Study Coaches are available daily - without appointments - to offer guidance on planning, procrastination prevention, and resit scheduling. While they do not provide content tutoring, their role in helping students stay on track academically has proven highly effective.

Hotelschool The Hague is committed to enhancing student support and wellbeing. The student counselling programme offers confidential and comprehensive assistance on a range of matters, including legal issues, personal circumstances, cultural challenges affecting study success, and mental well-being.

In addition to Study Coaches and Student Counsellors, MA.LHT students may seek guidance from the Programme Coordinator, who provides tailored advice on alternative courses, assessments, study planning, and exemptions in case of deviations in study progress. Confidential advisers are also available to support students in cases of undesirable behaviour, while the Service Desk serves as the first point of contact for students, parents, staff, and external parties.

Furthermore, HTH takes responsibility for ensuring that students understand the school's system, rules, and procedures, which are detailed in the Student Charter and Education and Examinations Regulation (available on MS Teams). Students can access essential academic and administrative information - such as schedules, course syllabi, assessments, and study load - through MyHotelschool.nl, while general updates and announcements are available on the HTH Intranet.

The careful selection, counselling, and tutoring processes have positively impacted student retention, leading to minimal dropouts since the programme's inception:

Future Aspirations

Building on its strong foundation of student support, HTH aims to further enrich the learning experience by strengthening leadership development. This includes enhancing the Personal Leadership course with a more structured focus on coaching, clearly outlining the specific skills and competencies covered.

To foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment, the programme will introduce kick-off and mid-year sessions led by the Programme Manager. The kick-off session will focus on onboarding, establishing psychological safety, and setting expectations for the teaching and learning experience. The mid-year session will serve as a reflective moment, reinforcing these principles and ensuring continued alignment with student needs.

Additionally, HTH seeks to strengthen the connection between the Personal Leadership course, Study Coaches, and Programme Management, creating a more integrated approach to student development. By enhancing collaboration among these key stakeholders, the programme will provide more tailored support, fostering both academic success and personal growth.
